Server Room

Server Room

The Joint Computer Center (GRZ) of the FHI and the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, which emerged from the FHI Computer Center, began operations in March 1987 in the newly constructed building on the north campus of the Fritz Haber Institute. In the middle of the hexagonal building is the large computer hall (machine hall), which - by the standards of the time - had to meet high requirements in terms of air conditioning and was adapted to current requirements through several (sometimes extensive) modifications.

Backup

Backup

Our backup service includes backing up, archiving and restoring your data.
All servers and central systems can be automatically backed up long-term. The virtual instances of the virtualization environment can be backed up and restored during operation and in real time. We also make it possible to back up any data, especially for mobile clients via the Internet. The files are transmitted and stored in standardized encrypted form.

GNZ Collaboration

GNZ Collaboration

The Joint Network Center (GNZ) as the IT location in the Berlin/Brandenburg region combines local speed with supra-regional standards and thus ensures an efficient IT infrastructure in the region. Its core task is the reliable and efficient operation of shared IT services and IT infrastructure (Internet, network, backup, archive, virtualization, server/storage, IT security). All eight Max Planck Institutes and the Max Planck facilities in Berlin and Brandenburg belong to the GNZ collaboration.

IT Security

IT Security

Scientific research and its environment require a high level of security. Both the information and the associated IT resources such as personnel, infrastructure, service providers etc. require the right level of security to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability. The IT security officers at the GNZ support the institutes MPIWG, MPIMG, FHI, MPIIB as well as the Harnack House and the MPG Archive with appropriate concepts and measures to guarantee these security goals.

Cloud / Storage

Cloud / Storage

We offer scientists and IT staff a fast and scalable way to store and synchronize their data easily and securely. A consistent database can be accessed directly from several computers, but also via a web interface. This makes it possible to share, edit or manage documents from anywhere and with any device.

Virtualization

Virtualization

Our server virtualization environment at the GNZ allows us to make the best possible use of hardware resources and adapt the performance individually to the requirements of the desired application. In this way, hardware can be divided into several independent software resource pools across departments and institutes, thereby optimizing costs and resources.
The virtual systems are individually and automatically backed up according to the respective requirements.

Network

Network

For local networks in Max Planck Institutes (LAN/WLAN) and wide area networks of MPG in the region Berlin/Brandenburg (MAN/WAN), GNZ offers a comprehensive service from planning and installation, through operation and management, to error analysis and troubleshooting.
GNZ operates fiber optic, copper and wireless networks, complex network topologies with switches, routers and firewalls as well as IP address management and network monitoring systems.

Internet

Internet

Research work requires fast and reliable Internet access.
The GNZ operates and coordinates all network connections of the MPG in Berlin/Brandenburg region to Internet nodes of the Deutsches Forschungsnetz (DFN) in Berlin and Potsdam.
For the direct exchange of scientific data, the GNZ also provides connections to the Berlin Research Area Information Network (BRAIN).
